White Hair Ka Ilaj: Is There a Permanent Fix?

Quick verdict: Myth, for a permanent reversal. Greying that's due to genes or age can't be permanently reversed by any oil, food or tablet. Some early greying is linked to treatable problems, such as vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid disease or smoking, and fixing those may slow it. For covering grey hair, henna and dyes work, but they don't change the hair growing from the root.

Why hair turns white

Hair colour comes from melanin, made by pigment cells (melanocytes) in each follicle. Over time, these cells slow down and eventually stop. Oxidative stress, including a build-up of hydrogen peroxide in the follicle, plays a part. Once a follicle has lost its pigment cells, its hair grows white.

Genes are the biggest factor. If your parents greyed early, you probably will too.

What counts as premature greying?

Greying is generally considered premature if it starts before about age 20 in people of South Asian background. Many Pakistanis notice their first few white hairs in their twenties, which is common and usually genetic.

Possibly treatable causes of early greying

CauseCluesWhat to do
Vitamin B12 deficiencyTiredness, tingling, a sore tongue. More common in vegetariansBlood test, then treatment
Thyroid problemsWeight change, feeling cold or hotTSH test
Low iron, copper or vitamin DTiredness, hair fallBlood tests
Smoking—Quitting may slow further greying
VitiligoWhite patches of skin, with white hair in themSee a dermatologist
Severe stressLinked in research, though the details are still being studiedStress management

Even when a cause is found and treated, hairs that are already white may not regain colour. The aim is mostly to slow down new greying.

Desi remedies checked

Amla: Myth (for reversal)

It's popular in hair oils and packs. It may condition, but there's no good evidence that it restores colour.

Curry leaves in coconut oil: Myth

Traditional, but there's no reliable human evidence.

Kalonji oil: Myth

No evidence for reversing grey hair.

Onion juice: Myth

The claim that it restores colour has no good human evidence.

Black tea or coffee rinse: Maybe (temporary cover only)

These can slightly darken hair for a while, like a weak stain. They're not a permanent fix.

Henna (mehndi): Works (as a dye)

Pure henna stains hair reddish-orange. Mixed with indigo, it gives browner to black shades. It covers grey but doesn't stop greying. Black henna (kala mehndi) often contains PPD, which can cause severe allergic reactions.

Dyes: the practical option

  • Permanent dyes cover grey most reliably. Do a patch test 48 hours before every use, because PPD allergy can develop even after years of use without problems.
  • Semi-permanent dyes fade gradually and are gentler.
  • Henna and indigo suit people who want a plant-based option.

Signs of a dye allergy include itching, burning, swelling of the scalp, face or eyes, or blistering. If this happens, rinse it off and see a doctor. Severe swelling is an emergency.

Tablets and "anti-grey" supplements

Supplements help only if you're deficient. Biotin, catalase or "anti-grey" capsules have no good evidence for reversing grey hair in people who aren't deficient. Too much of some nutrients, like selenium, can harm hair.

What about the white hair in my beard?

The same rules apply: genetics and age come first, and B12 or thyroid problems are worth checking if greying is very early. Beard dyes need patch testing, as facial skin can react strongly.

Does pulling out a white hair make more grow?

Myth. Each follicle grows one hair. Plucking doesn't affect neighbouring follicles, but repeated plucking can damage the follicle and lead to no hair at all.

A sensible plan

  1. If greying started very early, or comes with tiredness or tingling, ask a doctor about B12, thyroid, iron and vitamin D tests.
  2. If you smoke, quitting is good for your hair as well as your health.
  3. Choose a cover method you're comfortable with: henna, dye, or simply embracing the silver.
  4. Patch test every dye, every time.

Quick answers

Is kala mehndi safe? Products sold as black henna often contain PPD, which can cause severe allergic reactions. Pure henna mixed with indigo is a safer plant-based option. Patch test it either way.

See a doctor or dermatologist if…

  • Greying started before age 20, especially with other symptoms
  • You notice white patches on your skin
  • You have tingling, numbness, a sore tongue or ongoing tiredness
  • A dye or henna caused itching, swelling or blisters

Bottom line

There's no white hair ka permanent ilaj for genetic or age-related greying. Check for treatable causes if it's very early, quit smoking, and use henna or dyes safely if you want to cover it.
